...offers drama and acting classes for grades 8 through 12, as well as directing/scriptwriting and stagecraft for motivated students
DRAMA 8 is part of an introductory mosaic course which exposes students to four elective areas throughout a semester. The students rotate through the subject areas. In the drama quarter, students are introduced to basic stage directions and terminology, improvisation, movement, voice, character, theatre games, and scriptwriting. DRAMA 9 is a full semester course which combines basic skill building exercises and theatre games with improvisation and formal performance work. Other areas of study include stage terminology, basic scenic design, scriptwriting, movement and dance, and acting styles, techniques and genres. DRAMA 10 is a full semester course which incorporates both improvisation and formal scene work. Students write and perform original monologues, scenes, and one act plays. They also write, film, and edit a video project. Students are introduced to the life and works of Shakespeare through an open creative project. |

ACTING 11 is a senior, performance based course where students further develop skills in acting and scriptwriting.
They are required to complete scene and character analyses, and participate as directors and critics. The final
project is a mock audition where students must prepare and perform two contrasting monologues.
ACTING 12 is the pinnacle of the Theatre Arts program in that the students are charged with the responsibility of
creating and performing two major assemblies for the entire school population: the Remembrance Day Assembly
and the Christmas Assembly. Cold readings, monologues, and a comic scene unit round out the course. Acting 12
is only offered in the first semester, and Acting 11 is a prerequisite.
DIRECTING/SCRIPTWRITING 12 offers senior students the opportunity to create original characters and scripts, and to work as directors for Acting 11 students in a variety of performance exercises. Acting 11 is a prerequisite.
STAGECRAFT 11 introduces senior students to every aspect of production from scenic design to lighting and sound. Students may have the opportunity to work with the professional technicians of Western Canada Theatre.
